Punch Upon a Time Best Pocket Items

Tier-ranked Pocket Items for every Squad Saga mode.

Last updated:

Not every Pocket Item in Punch Upon a Time is created equal. The 40+ item roster has clear power tiers, and the strongest items change based on the upcoming mode. This page ranks every Pocket Item by current meta, then breaks down the best item for each mode so you can plan your loadout between rounds.

Tier S — always pick these

  • Freeze Wand — the single best defensive Pocket Item in the game. Freezes any pilot for 2 seconds. Pairs with every mode and every character.
  • Big Top Hat — the single best area-denial item. Knocks opposing pilots backwards in a 3m radius. Pairs with Basketball, Sumo, and Throne Defence.
  • Speed Boost — the single best utility item. Increases sprint speed for 8 seconds, which lets you chase knocked-off pilots back onto platforms or contest mid-map objectives.

Tier A — strong in specific modes

  • Shield Charm — absorbs one elimination. Pairs with Long Live the King and Capture the Crown.
  • Medkit — restores 50% HP to the squad. Pairs with Sumo and Arena Rush.
  • Magic Bomb — 80 damage in a 5m radius. Pairs with Brawl and Sky Battle.
  • Puppet String — pulls an opposing pilot toward you. Pairs with Pinocchio and Sumo.

Tier B — situational picks

  • Lightning Strike — strong in Red-Light-Green-Light but punishable in 1v1 rounds.
  • Mirror Shield — reflects the next attack back at the attacker. Pairs with high-damage opposing pilots.
  • Teleport Scroll — opens up new strategies in objective modes but is hard to use on reaction.
  • Vision Charm — reveals opposing pilots on the map. Strong in Throne Defence but useless in 1v1 rounds.

Tier C — niche or risky

  • Carrot Boost — strong on paper but the duration is too short to win rounds consistently.
  • Magnet Charm — only useful in Coin Rush mode.
  • Phase Cloak — strong in objective modes but punishable by area-of-effect items.

Tier chaos — never carry these

  • Wild Card, Confusion Bomb, Gravity Flip, Time Warp, Mirror Match — these items are fun in casual lobbies but rarely win rounds in serious play. Skip them in competitive Squad Saga.

  • Long Live the King: Freeze Wand, Vision Charm
  • Sumo: Big Top Hat, Anchor Drop
  • Capture the Crown: Shield Charm, Speed Boost
  • Brawl: Magic Bomb, Big Top Hat
  • Arena Rush: Medkit, Big Top Hat

Future updates

The studio ships new Pocket Items every season. The Patch Notes page tracks every addition, and this Best Items page updates with new tier rankings as they join the launch roster.

Pairing items with launch characters

The 12 launch characters each have a kit that synergises with a specific item archetype. The strongest one-shot pairings are:

  • Frog Prince + Rocket Boots — Rocket Boots add two extra dodges to Frog Prince’s standard three-dodge kit, making him the fastest dunk in Basketball and the deadliest edge chaser in Sumo.
  • Pinocchio + Mega Punch Glove — Pinocchio’s puppet ultimate locks a single opposing pilot in place, and Mega Punch Glove doubles his charged-smash damage for a guaranteed knockout on the locked target.
  • Merlin + Mirror Shield — Mirror Shield reflects the next attack back at the attacker, and Merlin’s ranged wand attacks bait the attacker into a reflected projectile that ends the trade favourably for your squad.
  • Little Red + Pocket Decoy — Pocket Decoy spawns a stationary clone of your pilot, and Little Red’s dash-cancel ultimate lets her swap places with the clone mid-charge to confuse opposing pilots hunting her in Red-Light-Green-Light.
  • Sleeping Beauty + Big Top Hat — Big Top Hat pushes opposing pilots back 3 metres, and Sleeping Beauty’s Thorn Wall ultimate covers the same radius, so pairing them turns the centre of Sumo into an untouchable zone.

Pocket Item Roulette and event rotations

The studio runs a Pocket Item Roulette event every other weekend in the public demo. Instead of choosing two items per round, the mode picks a random item for your squad each round. Players who win three Roulette rounds in a row unlock a profile badge. The event has no impact on regular Squad Saga matchmaking and resets every Monday at 00:00 UTC.

Item economy and unlock sources

All Pocket Items are unlocked through play. New pilots earn items fastest by grinding the Item Brawl mode (every Item Brawl win unlocks one new item slot). Pocket Item unlocks and tutorial progression carry over from the demo to the full launch, so demo players start the full game with the entire launch item roster unlocked by default.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Which Pocket Item should I always carry?

Freeze Wand is the single best defensive item across all modes. Pair it with Big Top Hat for the strongest general-purpose loadout.

Do items cost anything in-game?

No — items are free and unlimited. You choose two per match and the cooldown resets each time you use them.

Which item is best for new pilots?

Freeze Wand and Big Top Hat are the easiest items to use on reaction. Avoid chaos items until you have practised in Practice mode.

Which item pairs best with Frog Prince?

Rocket Boots are the single best pairing for Frog Prince, because the extra sprint lets him chain multiple dodges off the platform in Sumo or pull off cross-court dunks in Basketball within a single round timer.

Does Gravity Boots work in objective modes?

Yes — Gravity Boots add 1.5 seconds of mid-air drift after a dodge cancel, which is extremely strong in Long Live the King and Target Smash because it lets you reposition around the throne or target ring without burning your jump.
