Punch Upon a Time Squad Saga Modes

40+ mini-games across the launch roster — and the win conditions you must know.

Last updated:

Squad Saga rotates through 40+ modes per match. Every mode has a unique win condition, and the squad that knows the conditions in advance wins more rounds. This hub breaks down the four signature modes — Basketball, Red-Light-Green-Light, Long Live the King, and Sumo — plus the complete Mode List for reference.

Why modes matter

Punch Upon a Time is not a single game. Each Squad Saga match is a chain of mini-games drawn from a pool of 40+. The squad that wins each mode scores damage on the opposing squads’ sky galleons. The last squad standing wins the Saga. Modes fall into four broad archetypes:

  • Objective — capture a point, hold a zone, deliver an item. Examples: Long Live the King, Capture the Crown.
  • Score attack — score the most points before the timer ends. Example: Basketball.
  • Elimination — knock out opponents until only one squad remains. Example: Sumo.
  • Reflex — react to visual or audio cues. Example: Red-Light-Green-Light.

Knowing which archetype is coming next lets you plan Pocket Items before the round loads. The Squad Strategy page covers queue reading in detail.

The four signature modes

The launch roster highlights four modes that appear in every playtest:

  1. Basketball — 2v2 score-attack mode. The squad that scores the most dunks before the timer ends wins the round.
  2. Red-Light-Green-Light — reflex mode. Move on green, freeze on red. The last squad with a living pilot wins.
  3. Long Live the King — king-of-the-hill mode. Hold the throne for the longest cumulative time to win.
  4. Sumo — elimination mode. Knock opponents off the platform; last squad standing wins the round.

Each mode has its own page with win conditions, Pocket Item recommendations, and beginner tips.

The full mode list

The launch build ships with 40+ modes. The Mode List page covers every mode in the launch roster with one-paragraph summaries, recommended Pocket Items, and difficulty ratings. New modes will be added each season — the Patch Notes page tracks every new mode as it ships.

How to learn the mode pool

Most new pilots try to learn every mode at once. That is the wrong approach. Instead:

  1. Pick three modes you like and master their win conditions.
  2. Pick three modes you dislike and learn the minimum counter-strategy.
  3. Ignore the rest until you reach the Tier List page’s recommended rank.

Mastery of the four signature modes is enough to reach the top 25% of Squad Saga ladders; the rest is incremental optimisation.
