Punch Upon a Time Capture the Flag Mode Guide

Run the flag, block the runner, and bank three captures before the timer ends.

Last updated:

Capture the Flag is one of the four core objective modes in Punch Upon a Time. Two squads spawn on opposite sides of the arena, each guarding a stationary flag. The squad that captures the opposing flag three times before the timer expires wins the round. This page covers the scoring rules, Pocket Item picks, the three squad roles, and the anti-grab tech that wins late-game flag runs. For the full mode list, see the Mode List.

How the round plays

Each Capture the Flag round runs 90 seconds. Both flags sit on raised pedestals on opposite ends of the arena. Pilots cannot damage opposing pilots while standing on their own flag pedestal, but they can be grabbed, frozen, or pushed by Pocket Items. The round ends the moment a squad completes three captures, or when the timer reaches zero — in which case the squad with the most captures wins. Ties resolve by total HP remaining on the squad’s sky galleon.

A flag is captured by picking it up on the opposing side of the arena and carrying it across the centre line back to your own pedestal. If the carrier is eliminated or hit by a flag-zap while carrying, the flag drops where they fell, and either side can pick it up after a 1.5-second grace window.

The three squad roles

The strongest Capture the Flag squads assign one pilot to each role:

  • Carrier — the fastest pilot on the squad. Their only job is to grab the opposing flag and bank it. They should never engage in fights unless blocked.
  • Blocker — the tankiest pilot. They stand on the centre line or near the opposing flag and absorb grabs, freezes, and Pocket Item casts to keep the Carrier free.
  • Runner — the wildcard. The Runner fakes a flag grab to bait the opposing squad into committing Pocket Items, then rotates back to defend their own flag or set up the next Carrier push.

A four-pilot squad adds a Sniper who sits on the high ground and uses ranged attacks to interrupt opposing flag carriers. The Roster page lists which characters fit each role.

Pocket Item picks

Capture the Flag rewards mobility and disruption. The three strongest Pocket Items are:

  • Speed Boost — extends your sprint window and lets the Carrier cross the centre line in 4 seconds flat. Bind one on the Carrier every round.
  • Big Top Hat — knocks opposing pilots backwards when they approach the flag pedestal. Excellent Blocker tech — stand on your flag and activate on contact.
  • Magnet Charm — pulls the opposing flag slightly toward your pedestal, which lets the Carrier grab it without crossing the full arena. This is the strongest single-item tech in the mode.

Avoid healing Pocket Items in Capture the Flag. The round is too short for a Medkit to matter, and the gold cost is better spent on Speed Boost.

Anti-grab tech

The most common way to lose a Capture the Flag round is to get grabbed while carrying the flag. The grab animation locks you in place for 0.8 seconds, which is long enough for an opposing pilot to eliminate you and recover the flag. The counter is dodge-cancel on grab startup. If you press dodge the frame the opposing pilot initiates the grab, you cancel the lock animation and escape with the flag.

Practise this in Practice mode against a buddy who holds the grab button. The optimal timing window is the first 3 frames of the grab animation — after that, the lock is committed and you must tank the hit. Pair this with Mirror Shield on the Carrier to reflect any grab attempt that does land.

Voice comms timing

In a 12-player Squad Saga lobby, voice comms make or break a Capture the Flag round. The squad that calls the flag pickup first wins 70% of rounds. The optimal call structure is:

  1. Runner calls “fake north” to bait the opposing squad into committing Blockers.
  2. Carrier confirms “grab south, Speed Boost active” the moment they touch the opposing flag.
  3. Blocker calls “centre hold” to confirm they are stopping the return grab.
  4. Any squadmate calls “banked” the moment the flag touches the home pedestal.

If you do not have voice comms, ping the flag with the in-game ping wheel — the audio cue is loud enough for opposing squads to hear, but the carrier’s flag-zap sound confirms the bank.

Counter-strategy against elite squads

Elite Capture the Flag squads run a double-Carrier rotation. Both Carriers grab the opposing flag at the same time from opposite angles. The opposing squad cannot grab both Carriers simultaneously, so at least one Carrier banks. The counter is freeze priority: assign the Freeze Wand to your Blocker and freeze whichever Carrier crosses the centre line first. The other Carrier will be alone against your Runner on the return trip.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How long does a Capture the Flag round last?

Every Capture the Flag round runs 90 seconds. The squad that completes three captures before the timer ends wins. If the timer expires first, the squad with the most captures wins.

Can I grab the opposing flag while carrying mine?

No — pilots cannot pick up a second flag while carrying one. If you grab the opposing flag while your home flag is stolen, your flag drops on the spot and either side can recover it after the grace window.

What is the best Pocket Item for the Carrier?

Speed Boost is the strongest single Carrier item — it lets you cross the centre line in 4 seconds flat. Pair it with Mirror Shield to reflect any grab attempt that lands during the run.

Can the flag be grabbed from the pedestal by a Pocket Item?

Yes — Magnet Charm pulls the opposing flag slightly toward your pedestal, which lets a Carrier grab it without crossing the full arena. This is the strongest single-item tech in the mode and the reason Magnet Charm is banned in some tournament rulesets.

How do ties resolve when the timer hits zero?

Ties resolve by total HP remaining on the squad's sky galleon at the moment the timer expires. The squad with more galleon HP wins the round.
